The James Mollison, who is Kenyan born but grew up in England, says: ‘I found myself thinking about my bedroom, how significant it was during my childhood, and how it reflected what I had and who I was’.

'It occurred to me that a way to address some of the complex situations and social issues affecting children would be to look at the bedrooms of children in all kinds of different circumstances. From the start, I didn't want it just to be about 'needy children' in the developing world, but rather something more inclusive, about children from all types of situations.'

The artist published the photographs in a book "Where Children Sleep'. It is written and presented for an audience of 9-13 year olds ' intended to interest and engage children in the details of the lives of other children around the world, and the social issues affecting them, while also being a serious photographic essay for an adult audience.

Members of the Pilgrimage of Hope community of Kolkata, India 2011 were encouraged to reflect each evening on a moment of grace. This was easy enough to do in a supportive environment amidst the Sisters of Charity who are inspired by Mother Teresa in a country that is known as being the spiritual heart of the world.

My challenge now we have returned to affluent Australia is to notice one daily act of grace here, where kindness has been commodified by advertising agencies. Does grace survive materialism? I will find out.
Witnessing grace nourishes the soul. We do not have to be religious to notice it but we do need to have internal quiet. As a reminder of the qualities of tenderness and beauty I will endeavour to record one such moment on this Moment of Grace blog each day.

The relationship of people in the contemporary city is a very serious issue. The mass spread of digital devices such as mobile phones and Internet (SMS, Twitter etc.) have made it easy to communicate with others instantly, but on the other hand there are many people who have trouble in establishing a face-to-face relationship. They cannot mix with people but they don't want to be alone. This is a dilemma.

Chihiro Sasaki （佐々木千尋）is a London based illustrator/ artist. Originally from Japan, Tokyo, she studied and graduated from BA(Hons) Graphic Design at Cenral Saint Martins College of Art and Design in University of the Arts London in 2010.

She intends to encourage people to think about their own personal habits, which may hinder the communication process. Such defence mechanisms are often ignored,because in some cultures it is considered better to be honest and friendly to everyone. I did not want to make this project too dark, but make it comical enough to be accepted.

BP claim that they are 'beyond petroleum'. But this is a company that is up to its neck in the dirtiest oil going - poised to invest in the Canadian tar sands, and causing environmental catastrophe through deepwater drilling.

Their nice green logo doesn't really seem to fit them too well, so Greenpeace UK ran a competition to find a logo that they could use to rebrand BP.

Helen Lovee is a recent Central Saint Martins' graphic design graduate.
Artists statement: I identified ecology as common ground for all Australian people and an issue that could unite aboriginal and non-aboriginal Australians. 'Frog, lily, dog, frond and stick' is a set of five hand-drawn, digitally printed works that communicate the essence of the traditional aboriginal Australian philosophy. This is a way of thinking that promotes an intelligence of reserve, respect and resourcefulness. By illustrating how the traditional aboriginal people obtained their basic needs in a sustainable way I hope to portray the aboriginal people as role models for approaching the current environmental problems and in turn reduce the deep-rooted rift between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Australians.

The 'blush and black feather clutch has a crystal bird embellishment. 2011 TED Winner French street artist JR pastes enormous close up portraits of African women on any available wall space in their villages. He also printed them onto vinyl sheets then used to protect many leaking huts from rain, making murals seen from the sky. The portraits show the resilience and spirit of the women. 'I photograph anonymous women who are our daily heroes,' say JR, 'to make their story travel.'

This is Shorty Jangala Robertson. Jangala is his skin name, telling us which family group he belongs to. This belonging is more important than money, possessions or anything else for that matter. It is at the core of a complex mutual obligation system here in Yuendumu. Hang around Warkurlangu Aboriginal Arts centre long enough and one of the old women might give you a skin name. It will be used to greet you.

Every day Shorty comes to work. He waits at the gate for the centre to open. He waited on Christmas day. He waited on the day of the riots. He likes to work. He sits outside on the veranda by a fire and paints Water Dreaming. He is a legend. He generates income for the whole community. His paintings have been collected by the AGNSW and the National Gallery.
Shorty’s dreaming country is Mt Theo. He sings the sacred chant that protects and nourishes the kids who stay at Mt Theo whilst they detox from petrol sniffing. The program there is world renowned because it works. Dedicated local elders and white fellers set it up ten years ago and it has saved generations of teenagers’ lives. Mt Theo works because they construct and maintain strong relationships with the kids, elders, teachers, parents, youth workers, health professionals and government bodies bridging the gulf between black and white.

You can stay at Warkurlangu as a volunteer. You have the privilege of making Shorty a cup of tea and help him to collect wood for his fire. He will allow you to mix his paints and help to protect the canvas from rain drops, fire sparks and the occasional dog. He is one of the Old People who receive a hot lunch of chops and potatoes each day from the Old Peoples Centre. He is one of the last of the ‘First Contact’ blackfellers who knew life in the desert before white people came and brought plentiful food, destroyed their waterholes and killed his kin in the Conniston massacre. In this massacre he lost his mum. She walked hundreds of kilometres to find him and bring him home.

Every yogi learns that our thoughts are ultimately meaningless, or rather, not as meaningful as we think they are. The act of censoring them is also kind of pointless and we force those deemed 'bad' into the shadows where they lurk and fester. We get attached to these judgements basing all sorts of stuff on them from personal ideology to personality.
Letting go of the mind chatter is tricky, yet when we do whole new worlds of experience open up. We are conditioned to believe the chatter is real yet when we unpack it a little we can see it is so restrictive. It blocks us from connecting with our guts, our hearts and all the senses.
Discernment requires us to process this corporeal information. We may be wrong and right. We have space to apply intelligence and are more equipped to try new approaches.

Six Items or Less is a global experiment examining the power of what we don't wear. Follows the daily records of participants from all over the world who have agreed to limit their wardrobes to six items for a month. The restriction doesn't include underwear, raincoats and it is possible to double up on the same item for hygiene sake. Sounds like fun. Whenever I go away on a trip I end up wearing the same few items over and over, completely neglecting everything else in the suitcase. The art is in knowing what to pack in the first place.

Marina Abramovic is a performance artist whose recent retrospective at MOMA called The Artist is Present had people in tears. People (including Bjork) queued for hours to simply sit before her and weep. Well, some of them weep. After noticing all the tears on the MOMA flickr stream Katie Notopoulos made a blog on tumblr called Marina Abramovic Made Me Cry . The photos are often beautific and the collection makes very interesting viewing.

In 1967 Yoko Ono proposed an idea to collect a smile from every person on the planet. In those pre-internet times she suggested we all take a smiling snapshot of ourselves and deliver it to the local post office where each town can keep their images on file. Smiles were to be displayed on a tv network so we could see smiles from all over the world at the click of a button. Ever the peace activist Yoko Ono says the collection of smiles may remind president Johnson of the individuals killed in the Vietnam War.
Now its the new millenium, we can contribute to Yoko Ono's project by adding our smiles via facebook, flickr etc and here.

Kitchari - Thermos Flask Lunch

1 L thermos flask – open mouth variety (8 cms)
1 dessert spoon of Ghee or olive oil
A pinch of Asafoetida powder (hing)
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp fresh ginger
1/2-1tsp favourite curry powder
1-2 TB yellow mung dahl (washed 3 times)
1-2 TB cup basmati rice (washed 3 times)
1 cup fresh vegetables – finely to moderately chopped
2 cups water - approximately
Sea salt to taste

Method:
Heat ghee in a small non-stick sauceapan, add asafoetida and then spices and fry for 30 seconds. Then add all the other ingredients and make sure they are covered well with water and boil the mixture for 5 minutes only. Without wasting time, spoon hot mixture into thermos flask, screw lid on tightly and leave closed. The meal will be freshly cooked and ready to eat four hours later. Let sit before serving with a hot chippati drissled with a little ghee.

'One of the things I enjoyed most about studying new media and cultural theory was the juxtaposition of high and low culture. I realised how many of the themes of dense theoretical writing were the very same themes explored in film (and particularly science fiction). There was a certain twisted appeal in taking a fairly unapproachable text and accompanying it with imagery from films that have made me think over the years.
