On Reading

Reading can be a passive activity, we watch text with expectation of being entertained, much like watching television. Classically however reading required more intellectual participation. Just as a piano player reads music in order to play a tune composed by someone else, the reader brings talent, interpretation and ability to the activity. Zadie Smith suggests here that reading is an art and that we can be trained to real well.
