Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun

Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun (1755-1842) was a French painter recognized as the most famous woman painter of the eighteenth century. Her style is neoclassical in exhibiting ideals of simplicity and purity. Her work can also be considered Rococo in its grace, delicacy, and naturalism.

She travelled around Europe painting aristocracy including Marie Antoinette. This portrait of a Russian Countess catches my attention. Whilst the sitter appears feminine, coyly touching her cheek, her gaze is clear and direct, she is looking at us as much as we are looking at her.

COUNTESS VARVARA NIKOLAEVNA GOLOVINE, née Princess Galitzine (1766-1821)
