Abbess, Writer, Composer, and Physician (1098-1179)
Hildegard von Bingen was born September 16, 1098 in Bermersheim in Alzey. She was born to a wealthy family, but as the tenth child, she was tithed to the church. She lived with Jutta, a religious woman, who founded a monastery in Rupertsberg near Bingen on the Rhein. Upon Jutta's death in 1136, Hildegard became the Abbess of the monastery. As an Abbess of two convents near Bingen, Hildegard belonged to the very few women of her time who had any type of executive power.
From age five, Hildegard had religious visions. She was asked to write them by her bishop. The church was not against these visions, which depicted women as innocent, rather than the root of evil as popularly believed. However the church was nor officially in favor of these visions either.
She was a poet, composer, mystic, and researcher of nature, and also worked as a doctor and a preacher. The "inspiration" shaped her life and her thoughts. She composed 77 Gregorian chants. She also wrote many poems, and even a medical book. She wrote primarily in Latin, the official language of the church. Hildegard maintained correspondence with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Pope Alexander III, and Bernhard of Clairvaux. Her sermon trips raised attention, because she appealled to the conscience of the clergy.
